Role: creator and designer

This project was part of my Web and User Interface Foundations class where we had to find a small business website that needed improvement. I chose to redesign a website for Coffee Beans & Bikes; a small business downtown Stillwater, Minnesota. It is a combination of two companies, Green Bridge Coffee and Herman Electric Bikes.

I focused on making the design elements, like color and layout, consistent and creating a layout that emphasized the key information. To create this consistency I created a style guide(left) to make sure that I kept with the same style throughout.

Initial Steps

This project had multiple steps to make sure the website would be as user friendly and cohesive as I could make it. To understand what would work well in the website I looked at competitor websites to see what works well and created multiple personas to get in the mind of those that would use the site. This allowed me to understand the wants and needs of those using the site. Because of the personas I knew to show separation between the two companies aspects as some people will only want to view one without bothering with the other.

Main Issues

The main issue with the original website was that it was hard to find key information like items on the menu or store hours. As shown to the left I chose to put the hours right at the top so it was easy to find. I cleaned up the menu so there is better hierarchy; the prices aren’t listed as that information was not available in the original website to base it off.

User Testing

During this project I conducted user testing at multiple points. The first user test was during my low fidelity designs. I found out that the bike page was still a little confusing so I focused my next drafts at clearing that up. I ended up with this design as later user testing proved it effective. I kept the hours at the top to create consistency between the coffee shop page and the bikes page. Then the map is equal to the reservation info so that they are easy to reference.
